What’s on in Lyon

Lyon amphitheatre
Often referred to as France’s second city, Lyon proves there’s absolutely no shame in claiming silver. In fact, with its charming architecture, exquisite cuisine and array of classy cultural attractions, it often threatens to make the gold winner look downright gaudy by comparison.

Don’t believe us? For a sure fire way to fall in love with Lyon, start your trip in the city with a funicular ride up Fourvière hill. From the top you can admire a spectacular panoramic view across the entire city and visit the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, an impressively imposing baroque church built in the late 19th century.

Nearby you’ll also find the Museum of Gallo-Roman civilisation, home to a huge collection of artefacts unearthed in the Rhône Valley, and just one of over 30 museums spread throughout the city. Also in the vicinity you’ll find the ancient Théâtre Romain amphitheatre, which dates back to around 15 BC.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the city’s charms are restricted to antiquities though. This very same Roman amphitheatre also regularly plays host to live music shows from world famous acts, and is the main venue for the Nuits de Fourviére festival which takes place every summer. What’s more there are various other cultural events held around the city throughout the year, such as the biennial Dance and Contemporary Art festivals, the Original Hip Hop festival, the Nuits Sonores electronic music festival, and the Tout le Monde Dehors arts festival.

Of course, once you’ve exhausted yourself with the varied delights of such glorious gatherings, you’re bound to feel in need of a bite or two. And luckily for you, Lyon offers some of the finest cuisine in the whole of France, nay the world. In fact it has the second most Michelin starred restaurants in the country, after the capital, so you won’t have any trouble finding some haute cuisine.

On the other hand if you’re looking for something a little less fancy but no less delicious you still won’t be disappointed. With just a little poking around you’re sure to stumble across one the cities many bouchons, traditional Lyonnais restaurants serving local food and wine in a convivial atmosphere, all at refreshingly reasonable prices.
