Father's Day in Paris or Brussels 2010

Father's Day in Paris or Brussels
What exactly do dads want? Surely they’ve already got enough ties? And yes, that new power drill may well be useful, but it’s not likely to fill their hearts with joy, is it?

These eternal questions have plagued philosophers and purchasers of presents for years, but thankfully we think we‘ve got the answer to your Father’s Day woes.

For a Father’s Day treat with a difference, surprise him with a trip to the continent on Eurostar. Our destinations boast plenty of attractions, from sampling fine seafood on Brussels’ rue de Boucher, to revisiting his youth by rocking out at France’s Fête de la Musique in Paris.

For all those food loving fathers
Both Paris and Brussels have hundreds of eateries to tantalise those taste buds. Throughout Paris this Father’s Day he can take his pick from an abundance of brasseries such as the famed Bofinger, or maybe opt for some Michelin star fine dining at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée.

In Brussels, meanwhile, dads with a sweet tooth will find themselves in hog’s heaven. Waffles can be picked up from vans throughout the city, and if this humble snack doesn’t quite cut the mustard (an odd image, we’re sure you’ll agree), there’s always chocolate. It seems that pretty much every street you walk down has at least one chocolate shop, and near the city’s Grand Place there’s even a Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate, where you can find out about its history, how it’s made and maybe even try a few free samples.

Head to a museum for some daducation
This Father’s Day, give your dad the gift of knowledge by sending him to Paris or Brussels to soak up some culture in the cities’ numerous museums.

Tell him not to be put off by the masses of punters shuffling in and out of Paris' mega-museums; it would be a shame to leave the city without visiting the Louvre or the Musée d'Orsay. Contrary to popular belief, early mornings are always busiest, so suggest he go at lunch or a couple of hours before closing time.

In Brussels he can admire the work of early Flemish and Dutch masters at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, or get in touch with his inner child at the Belgian Comic Strip Centre. Alternatively he can make beautiful music at the Musée des instruments de musique, which houses a unique collection of around 1,500 instruments.

And, speaking of music…
The Paris Jazz Festival boasts two months worth of free jazz weekends at the Parc Floral every year, while the yearly Fête de la Musique takes place across the whole of France on the summer solstice, with free gigs encompassing all musical genres held on the streets and in hundreds of venues.

Brussels also boasts its own Fête de la Musique on the summer solstice, with a varied line up encompassing everything from classical to electronic. There’s also Couleur Café, a yearly festival dedicated to all things urban. Just make sure you remind your dad to pack his dancing shoes.
