Something different in Paris?
In 1785, Paris decided to solve the problem of its overflowing cemeteries by exhuming the bones of the buried and relocating them to the tunnels of several disused quarries, leading to the creation of the Catacombes. Visitors to this attraction will find themselves 20m (65ft) underground, working their way along corridors stacked with bones. Please note there are only stairs (quite a few of them!) leading down and up again so bear this in mind if you are thinking of visiting.

Or if you prefer something overground, how about Louis XIII's herb garden that was founded in 1626 Paris' botanical gardens are a serious institute rather than a leisure destination, but fascinating all the same. They're split into sections including a winter garden, tropical greenhouses and an alpine garden, as well as the school of botany. (There's also a menagerie.) The most scenic transport to get here is Batobus so look out for that too!

Something different in Brussels?
Five minutes walk from the Grand Place at the centre of Brussels, you will find MIM, the Musical Instrument Museum. The museum holds one of the most interesting displays of musical instruments in the world. The MIM collection began in 1877. Formerly it was housed in a very small building, where it was only possible to see a few instruments at a time. The present building was opened in 2000; it is huge and over 1500 instruments are on display.

Did you know there was a female equivalent of the Manneken-Pis? A short walk from the Grand Place is Rue des Bouchers with many restaurants serving traditional Belgian dishes. In the middle of this road there is a short passage called Impasse de la Fidelité. At the end of this you can see the female Jeanneke-Pis (erected in 1987).
