Liège city breaks

Liège holidays and city breaks

Liège has far more to it that first meets the eye – it’s the cultural hub of Belgium’s Wallonia region, with museums and art on tap and a lively nightlife scene. The best way to arrive is via the spectacular Liège-Guillemins Train Station, a modern architectural triumph which resembles a baseball cap, a stingray or a woman lying on her side, depending on your perspective. Straddling the Meuse and with a backdrop of Ardennes foothills, Liège is a city of wide boulevards, pockets of timber-frame architecture and pretty parks.

Things to see and do

Museums

Culture fans should start at the Grand Curtius, which went through a €50-million redevelopment two decades ago. It houses a wealth of treasures, weaponry, archaeology and decorative arts in the red-painted former mansion-warehouse of a 16th-century Liège arms dealer (supposedly it was originally painted with ox blood). It has a vast collection and exhibits on Liège industries throughout the ages.

Learn more about the history of the region at the Museum of Walloon Life, set in the stunning former monastery of the Franciscans, and housing everything from literature to folklore and crafts.

Old Citadel

Stretch your legs by climbing the 373 steps of the Montagne de Bueren’s staircase to the Old Citadel.

Belgian explorer and adventurer Louis-Philippe Loncke simulated an ascent of Mount Everest here during the pandemic, by doing the 9000-metre climb 135 times while carrying a 15kg backpack.

Best places to eat and drink in Liège

Place du Marché is a great place to explore bars, restaurants and brasseries. Find a spot to try local specialty Boulet à la liégeoise – meatballs in sweet brown sauce served with fries, mayo and apple purée. Chase it with the local Walloon gin – pèkèt. The place to make the most of Liège’s buzzing nightlife is Le Carré, where pedestrianised streets are lined with numerous late-night bars and taverns.
